Directions
By Land
From
the North / North-East
Follow the A59 from Preston towards Southport
and Liverpool. Approximately 8 miles from Preston the road takes a sharp
right hand bend and immediately crosses two bridges (the first over the
River Douglas, the second over the Leeds-Liverpool Canal). Take the next
turning right (sign-posted Tarleton) and follow that road for about three-quarters
of a mile into the village of Tarleton and until the road bends sharply
to the left. Immediately following the bend, turn right into Hesketh Lane
and towards Hesketh Bank. Continue into the village of Hesketh Bank until
you pass "The Becconsall" public house on the left. The next
turning right is Becconsall Lane and the boatyard is to be found at the
end of the lane.
From
the South / South-East
Leave the M6 at junction 27 and take the A5209
to Burscough. In Burscough turn right on the A59 towards Preston. After
approximately 6 miles, go straight across the traffic lights into the
village of Tarleton, going straight on at the first mini roundabout
and then turning right at the second mini roundabout. Take the next
left into Hesketh Lane and drive into the village of Hesketh Bank. Continue
into the village until you pass "The Becconsall" public house
on the left. The next turning right is Becconsall Lane and the boatyard
is to be found at the end of the lane.
From
the West
Leave the M61 at junction 8 and follow the
signposts to Southport. You will eventually arrive at a T-junction with
the A59 going left to Burscough and right to Preston and Southport.
Turn right on the A59 towards Preston. After approximately 3 miles,
go straight across the traffic lights into the village of Tarleton,
going straight on at the first mini roundabout and then turning right
at the second mini roundabout. Take the next left into Hesketh Lane
and drive into the village of Hesketh Bank. Continue into the village
until you pass "The Becconsall" public house on the left.
The next turning right is Becconsall Lane and the boatyard is to be
found at the end of the lane.
The recommended route for entering the River Ribble from the
Irish Sea is now via the main channel. The old method of entering via the "Hole in the Wall" is
no longer recommended.
Directions
From the Leeds-Liverpool Canal
Follow
the Rufford branch of the Leeds-Liverpool Canal to its end at Tarleton
Lock. At a suitable state of the tide, lock through onto the River Douglas
and follow the river downstream for about 1 mile. Douglas Boatyard is
on the left bank of the river and there are deep water moorings on the
floating pontoon (at the boatyard end of the main pontoon).
